Wrinkles—or more technically, rhytides—are a natural part of the aging process. As the skin loses elasticity, normal movements like smiling, frowning, and squinting can cause the breakdown of collagen in the areas that move. This results in the creasing of the skin that has become so synonymous with getting older. Even losing weight or body mass and sleeping in the same position over and over again can hasten the appearance of these fine lines. Other factors such as sun exposure, smoking, and poor hydration can contribute to the formation of the folds, ridges, and creases that can develop on all parts of the body.
But hope is not lost. Simple changes in lifestyle coupled with advanced skin-care products can work to fight the formation of creases and folds and give your skin the smooth, supple appearance that it once had. Here are nine natural ways to fight wrinkles as you age.
1. Sleep On Your Back
Plastic surgeon and creator of the JuveRest, Dr. Goesel Anson, describes what happens when we sleep:
Sleep wrinkles form when the face is compressed against a pillow night after night and they occur in predictable locations based on fixed anchor points that hold the skin to bone. These wrinkles disappear immediately on younger skin, but will eventually become permanent from constant compression and decreased skin elasticity with age.
Dr. Anson’s best advice? Sleep on your back. This minimizes facial contact with the pillow and prevents, or at least decreases, the onset of the wrinkles associated with pressure and compression.
2. Stevioside
Stevioside is a compound extracted from the stevia plant that works to minimize new wrinkle creation. It minimizes wrinkles by preventing involuntary muscle contractions that can cause the premature wrinkling of the skin. Applying a cream that contains stevioside, like SiO’s Décolleté Serum, is an excellent way to fight wrinkles wherever they may occur.
3. Sleep With Silk
Another factor that plays a role in the wrinkle creation process is traction. When you sleep, you’re not completely still. So, if you sleep on your side, your face is rubbing and pulling against the pillow case while gravity and your clothing are pulling down on your chest.
A silk pillowcase can reduce the traction on the face and a silk nightie can reduce the traction on the chest. Both can help delay the onset of the wrinkles associated with sleep.
4. Anti-Inflammatories
On the cellular level, wrinkles are formed by the breakdown of collagen in the skin. The weakening of the collagen bonds can result in inflammation which can extend into the visible layers of the skin and contribute to the rapid development of wrinkles.
Natural substances like shea butter, licorice root, and aloe are natural anti-inflammatories that can serve to not only reduce the aforementioned inflammation, but provide beneficial antioxidants and moisturizers to the skin. Using a product that contains these natural substances such as the SiO Décolleté Serum can help fight the formation of wrinkles.
5. Copper Mask
Dermatologist Joshua Zeichner had this to say on the topic of combatting the signs of aging:
Copper definitely plays an important role in maintaining healthy skin. It helps to develop collagen and elastin, which maintain the strength of the skin, and it promotes the production of skin-plumping hyaluronic acid.
Using a copper-infused mask (be it one you wear or one you apply at night) can go a long way toward preventing the wrinkles associated with the advance of time. An added benefit of using a copper-infused masking cream at night is that it makes you more motivated to sleep on your back which can also help fight wrinkle formation.
6. Hydrators
You can work to keep your skin healthy from the inside out by drinking plenty of water. You can also work to keep your skin hydrated from the outside in by using products that contain natural hydrators.
These natural hydrators do just what their name implies—they add moisture to your skin. Hydrators, though, shouldn’t be confused with moisturizers which only work to seal moisture in. Apply a lotion that contains natural hydrators and then apply a moisturizer to seal it all in.
7. Meditation
Meditation can be a powerful ally in the fight against wrinkles. Chief amongst those powerful effects is the fact that meditation can help reduce stress. This reduction in stress, then, helps to relax your muscles giving your skin the time it needs to return to its normal position.
For example, think of all the time you spend each day smiling or squinting or frowning. Do you ever really relax your facial muscles? Probably not. That means that for the majority of your waking hours, your muscles are in a position that contributes to the formation of wrinkles. Relaxing those muscles through meditation can help return your skin to its natural position and eventually return to a smooth state.
8. Brighteners
Natural brighteners such as Vitamin C can help reduce hyperpigmentation, spotting, blemishes, and uneven skin tone. This brightening of the skin can go a long way toward giving your skin a more youthful appearance and erasing many of the signs of aging. Some serums suspend this Vitamin C in oil and water which can increase hydration and help to reduce damage from UVB free radicals. The SiO Décolleté Serum is a concentrate that smoothes wrinkles when applied in the morning.
9. Eat The Right Foods
Those free radicals mentioned in the previous section are unstable molecules such as pollutants and toxins that can damage our skin. Free radicals are best removed from the body by antioxidants such as Vitamins A, C, and E along with beta carotene.
The nice thing about these antioxidants is that they can be obtained easily in the foods we eat. Some of the best sources of antioxidants are:
- Kiwis
- Blueberries
- Prunes
- Spinach
- Beans
- Kale
- Cranberries
- Walnuts
- Artichokes
In general, fruits and vegetables are great sources of antioxidants so feel free to feast away on those healthy foods to help fight wrinkles naturally.
Other Natural Wrinkle Remedies
The remedies mentioned above are great ways to fight wrinkles without getting into the more expensive and invasive solutions like Botox™ and cosmetic surgery. For some, though, eating right, sleeping on their back, relaxation, and various natural compounds aren’t enough.
In those cases, products such as the SiO SkinPad can go a long way toward fighting those stubborn wrinkles that refuse to be smoothed. Now, wrinkles don’t have to be an inevitable part of getting older. With a little research and some good habits, you can work to fight wrinkles at any age and even fend off the lines and crow’s feet that accumulate with time.
