The skin on a woman’s chest is thin, delicate, and especially vulnerable to the aging process. Sun damage, dehydration, and the effects of gravity make this area particularly prone to wrinkles and the development of crepey skin. Because a woman’s cleavage is so directly tied to her sense of femininity, the appearance of deep wrinkles in this sensitive area can be especially distressing. The below eight steps, if taken consistently, can proactively help to prevent chest wrinkles from developing.
1. Remember To Take Your Vitamins
Derivatives of vitamin C are commonly found as the active ingredients found in many high-end face treatments. You can reap the benefits of this miracle ingredient without the fancy price tag by stocking fresh lemons or limes in your fridge, slicing them open, and applying them to your problem area 3-4 times per week. This home remedy is very effective for plumping skin and lightening sun spots.
2. Avoid Harsh Soaps
Many soaps contain active ingredients that strip the skin of its natural oils. The skin on a woman’s décolletage, like her hands, is naturally drier because it has fewer sebaceous glands than other areas of the skin. It’s important to protect the oils that naturally accumulate in the chest and cleavage areas to prevent early signs of aging. Use a gentle cleanser twice daily and remember to pat, rather than rub, dry.
3. Wear A Beauty Mask
Homemade masks can deliver powerful wrinkle fighting results if you use fresh ingredients with the right properties. They’re fun to make in the kitchen and easy on the budget. A few ingredients that are especially beneficial include avocado, which is high in fat and supports your skin’s lipid barrier, and yogurt, which contains lactic acid and provides a gentle but effective exfoliation for your delicate décolletage. Honey and banana are natural moisturizers. If you want to get a bit more exotic, one teaspoon of kelp powder can deliver a huge dose of nourishing omega 3 fatty acids. Combine whichever ingredients you prefer, and apply liberally to your chest and cleavage area for 10 minutes, then wash off and follow with moisturizer.
4. Moisturize, Moisturize, Moisturize
Dehydration sets the scene for wrinkles. So, make sure you drink a lot of water and are religious about applying a good amount of moisturizer to your décolletage at night before you go to bed and again after waking up in the morning. A word of warning: it’s best to be wary of basic moisturizers because they often contain harsh chemicals. Instead, spring for a moisturizer packed with natural ingredients such as shea butter, licorice root, aloe and coconut oil.
5. Minimize Sun Exposure
Sun damage is a big culprit when it comes to chest wrinkles. Many women wear clothing with low necklines without the use of adequate SPF coverage during their youth. As a woman approaches her late 30s, sun spots and even skin cancer may develop. So, it’s important to avoid burning in this area. The best way to protect yourself from health and beauty ramifications is by lathering up with sunscreen. Given the plethora of options out there and the sensitivity of your delicate décolletage, it’s hard to know which sunscreen is best. I often recommend choosing sun protection designed for children, containing natural ingredients such as zinc oxide or titanium dioxide instead of harsh chemicals.
6. Selecting The Right Bra
Exercise is proven to be important for healthy skin. So, heading out for a run, walk or spin class will surely contribute to a healthy looking décolletage. But be careful about which bra you choose to wear while exercising because the gravitational effects can have a big impact on chest wrinkling. Sports bras are known to constrict skin tissue, creating folds that can produce wrinkles. In the same vein, push up bras can cause wrinkling by creating skin folds in the cleavage. Instead of using sports bras and push-ups, choose to wear structured, supportive bras that solidify your breasts’ natural shape and placement, thereby promoting a smooth décolletage.
7. Get Your Beauty Sleep
Wrinkles in the chest and cleavage area are exacerbated by side-sleeping. While lying on your side for hours at a time, your breasts weigh downward, creating skin folds that deepen and become part of the skin’s fabric even after waking up. One way to avoid this creasing is to sleep on your back. However, it may not be comfortable at first and it may cause snoring! But it’s a helpful and easy way to prevent chest wrinkles if you can train yourself to adopt a new habit. One way to promote this new habit is to lie down in bed and place pillows along both sides of your body. You can also put a pillow underneath your knees to alleviate any back tension. Over time you will adjust to sleeping in this new position and you won’t need to use the side pillows anymore.
8. Using Overnight Treatments
Since body position while sleeping is paramount for preventing chest wrinkles in many women, a number of aids can be used in tandem with back-sleeping. Some women wear wrinkle-preventing bras, much like racerback-style bras but worn backward so that the central fabric panel covers the sensitive chest area and prevents the breasts from folding onto one another. Another solution is the décolletté pad, a self-adhesive strip made of silicon, which is typically used by plastic surgeons to treat scarring and skin damage by stimulating collagen production in the chest and cleavage areas. SiO Beauty’s Skinpad is the only clinically proven brand that resolves chest wrinkles within one night’s sleep while also preventing new wrinkles from developing.*
Show Wrinkles Who's Boss
The common symptoms of a neglected décolletage can be avoided through the pursuit of preventative measures. Deep cleavage wrinkles, brown sun spots, thinning, red skin, and crepe-like wrinkling on the upper chest can be prevented through a combination of awareness, self-care and treatments. By protecting themselves and thinking ahead, women can feel empowered to show off their best selves with confidence.
