“What can I do to tighten the skin on my neck?” We get asked that question a lot here at SiO Beauty, and we’ve found that the answer is often times a revelation to many women: Your face doesn’t stop at your chin. That’s right, your face includes your neck, and even your décolleté. That means that the same skin care routine you use on your forehead and eyes will work to keep skin tight on your neck and décolletage. Pretty amazing, right?
So if you’ve noticed your neck starting to look a bit saggy, it’s most likely due to the breakdown of collagen and elastin. When these important proteins begin to disappear due to age, sun exposure, or poor diet, your skin loses its elasticity and starts to droop. But you don’t have to accept sagging skin as inevitable. There are some simple steps you can take to keep the skin on your neck firm and tight regardless of your age. We’ve created this list of seven easy ways to regain the youthful appearance you’ve been looking for. And perhaps the best part of all, you can use these same tips to help keep your face and chest smooth, radiant, and wrinkle free as well.
1. Eat A Healthy Diet
A healthy diet is an essential part of any beauty routine. Given the right vitamins and minerals, your body will do an amazing job of keeping your skin soft, smooth, and tight. So where exactly do those vitamins and minerals come from? They come from the following foods:
- Fruits
- Vegetables
- Lean protein
- Healthy fats
To start setting the foundation for a healthy diet, make it a habit to eat from those four food groups every day while limiting your sugar and salt intake. We recommend eating at least one serving of fruit and one serving of vegetables with every meal. Include a small amount of lean protein like chicken or fish with your lunch and dinner. And if you get hungry between meals, snack on a handful of healthy fats like walnuts or almonds instead of that extra-large chocolate chip muffin.
2. Stay Hydrated
Drinking plenty of water every day is just as important—if not more important—for your skin as eating a healthy diet. This is because water benefits your skin in four very key ways:
- It smooths wrinkles and fills in pores.
- It supports collagen production.
- It maintains skin elasticity.
- It helps fend off breakouts by balancing the oil on your skin.
To get the most skin benefits from the water you drink, we recommend consuming at least eight cups of water every day. Start by drinking two cups in the morning with breakfast. Then drink two cups with lunch and two cups with dinner. To fill in the remaining two cups, fill a water bottle and sip between meals.
3. Exercise Your Neck Muscles
When you exercise your neck muscles, the skin on top of those muscles will naturally tighten. Here’s a simple exercise you can do anywhere to firm up loose skin between your shoulders and your chin.
- Place the palm of your hand on your forehead.
- Push your forehead into the palm of your hand without letting your hand move forward.
- Continue pushing for a count of ten.
- Relax.
- Clasp both hands behind your head.
- Push backward against your palms without letting your hands move backward.
- Continue pushing for a count of ten.
- Relax.
That’s one set. Repeat this process for a total of two sets to tone the muscles that support your head and tighten loose neck skin.
4. Apply A Hydrator And A Moisturizer Every Day
The water you drink keeps your skin hydrated from the inside out. But you can also hydrate from the outside by applying a hydrator and a moisturizer every day. Hydrating creams and lotions are designed to increase the water content of your skin with the help of humectants (substances that attract water from their surroundings) like glycerin and honey. Moisturizers, on the other hand, work to reduce water loss by forming a barrier over the surface of your skin. Here’s a simple three-step process to tighten the skin on your neck using these beneficial creams.
- Wash your neck with a gentle cleanser and pat dry with a soft towel.
- Apply a hydrating formula to add moisture into your skin.
- Apply a moisturizing formula on top to lock that water in.
By using a hydrator first, you may find that you need even less moisturizer than you did before. This is because the humectants in the hydrator make your skin more absorbent to the beneficial ingredients in the moisturizer. Combining a hydrator and moisturizer is a great one-two punch to help you achieve the soft, supple, tight neck skin you’ve been looking for.
5. Protect Your Skin Against Harmful UV Rays
Yes, you need a bit of sunshine each day to stay happy and healthy. But too much sun exposure can be harmful to your skin. The sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays penetrate deep into your skin’s lower layers where they damage the collagen and elastin that supply support, tone, and structure. When the collagen and elastin break down, skin begins to sag and droop.
You can protect your skin against the sun’s harmful UV rays by rubbing on an SPF 45 sunscreen before you leave the house. Be sure to reapply the sunscreen every few hours for all-day protection.
6. Lose Weight Gradually
When you lose weight rapidly, your skin doesn’t have time to adjust. This is especially true when your skin is already less elastic due to collagen and elastin loss. Without the ability to snap back and adjust to sudden weight loss, your skin can look and feel loose and baggy.
Sudden and rapid weight loss can be caused by illness and other uncontrollable factors. But it can also be caused by some weight loss programs. Instead of aiming to lose as much weight as you can as quickly as possible, set your goal to lose a more healthy one per week through diet and exercise. That may not seem like a lot when you’re just starting out, but when you add it all up, that’s four per month. At that rate, your skin will have time to adjust and tighten to accommodate your new, lighter body.
7. Massage Your Neck With Olive Oil
Combining the deep benefits of massage with the topical benefits of olive oil is an easy and relaxing way to tighten the skin around your neck. Gentle massage can relax and stimulate deep tissue and muscle allowing it, and the skin on top, to return to a more natural position. Olive oil is packed with antioxidants, hydrators, and moisturizers that make it an essential addition to any skin care routine. Here’s a simple way to put the two together.
- Start by washing your face and neck with warm water and an oil-free cleanser to remove makeup and open pores.
- Measure a tablespoon of olive oil into a small bowl (don’t worry, a little goes a long way).
- Sit or lie down so that your head is supported and your neck is relaxed.
- Dip your fingers in the olive oil.
- Gently massage the front and sides of your neck with up and down motions for two minutes.
- If need be, dip your fingers in the olive oil again.
- Now massage the front and sides of your neck using a side-to-side motion for two minutes.
- When you’re done with the massage, wash your hands but leave the olive oil on your skin.
Massaging your neck with olive oil twice a week is a quick and simple way to tighten and tone loose skin. You can even do it while you relax before bed or while watching TV.
